You're dead!

    Lampeter tombstones

An appropriate post for Friday the 13th, don’t you think? I know this seems awfully morbid and no one wants to think about the end of life but you know what? Death has everywhere the last word- none of us can escape it. As Brave-heart said, “every man dies, but how many truly live?”

I want you to write your obituary. You heard me. Go get your local newspaper and start a document on your computer. Mimic the style, the fonts, the way they are typically written. Read a bunch of them to get ideas on what to write. But here is the difference, this is YOUR obituary. You are the topic. I want you to write it as you would want it to be, a description of your ideal life. A celebration of the life of a wonderful person and a brief description of your most notable accomplishments.

You will soon realize that if you are having to fabricate a good story because it differs from reality too much, well, I suppose you have some work to do in your life, don’t you? What would you really like to be said about you when you are gone and would be unable to have a say in what is said? What defines you? How would you sum up your life in a paragraph?

Do you see the value of this exercise? If not, you will, once you do it. At a certain point it will dawn on you that you actually can control what will be said, which may change how you live from now on. Live!

You know, I’ve been a bit obsessed with the idea of what’d stay of me on Earth after I pass away… I can’t say it in paragraph… but I’ve started to write poetry, taking photos… trying to leave something behind:) Right you are, you should LIVE every single moment of your life:)

Friday the 13th is a silly superstition.

Anyway, the quote you presented is really something to be pondered, and I will probably be thinking about it for some time to come.

Thanks for the excercise. You know, writing an obituary for oneself is a difficult task. I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the post.
